Holidays in Dobrich Bulgaria
The District of Dobrich can be found in the very North-Eastern
part of Bulgaria. It borders with Romania to the North and has the beautiful Black
Sea to the East.
The District Capital also called Dobrich can be found approximately 37 kilometres
from the Romanian boarder 40 kilometres from the sea town of Balchik and 50 kilometres
to the North from Varna.
The City is one of the ten biggest in Bulgaria and one of the most important economic,
administrative and cultural centre in the North.
Dobrich has a good road network which allows easy access to the coastal areas, Albena,
Varna, Balchik etc and a direct route to Varna International Airport.
The City has a population of just over 100,000 people and dates as far back as the
3rd – 4th century.
Remains of Roman settlements were discovered to the north of the centre and in the
east.. An ancient Bulgarian settlement existed here as early as the 8th century.
However the first modern town sprang up in 15th century as a big market village.
By the end of 18th century and the beginning of 19th century a lot of Bulgarians
from the regions of Odrin, Kotel and Turgovishte settled here. In the course of
18th century and part of 19th century the town was the centre of the battle fields
of the Russian-Turkish Wars until they came to an end with the War of Liberation
of 1878. In 1882 the town became known as Dobrich (after the name of Dobrotitsa,
Bulgarian leader in medieval times, ruler of the area).
Since then this town has many times come under the influence of Romania. The first
Romanian occupation lasted till 1916, and again in 1919. Finally in 1940 when the
Krayova Agreement was signed and by peaceful means South Dobroudzha was once and
forever given back to Bulgaria. Until the present day, the 25 September has been the official holiday of the town to commemorate this return.
From 1949 till 1991 the town was called Tolbouhin but after that it regained its
old name. At present it is the centre of the largest grain-belt in the country called
the Bulgarian granary. Modern Dobrich is the agricultural centre for Northern Bulgaria
which is not to say, it doesn´t have a natural charm for the casual visitor. In
the centre of the city is "the old city", a small district of reconstructed renaissance
buildings.
Every year there is a Black Sea Festival which includes music, exhibitions, and
activities along the coast. In September in Dobrich there is a very important agricultural
fair.
Tourism here is for the country lover, walks through pastures and woodland and access
to nature reserves and wildlife. Dodrich Town is surrounded by quiet roads and country
tracks, suitable for cycling and pleasant cars excursions.
Of course not far from Dobrich you have the opportunity for boat trips, sailing
and diving along many parts of the Dobrich regional coastline.
