Continue your holiday in Bulgaria with a visit to PLOVDIV, the second largest city in Bulgaria. This city is very old, older even than the Eternal city, as Rome is conventionally known. It is situated on the Maritsa River, home to a number of parks, gardens, museums and archaeological monuments. A visit to this city is unthinkable without taking a pleasant stroll around what is known as ¨The Old Town¨. Numerous houses built from the national revival period, 18th and 19th century, cobbled streets where painters sit, small craft shops, where you may even try to make pottery the old fashioned way and green gardens Plovdiv – Old Towncomplete this picturesque sight. Most remarkable however, is the Ancient Theatre (Roman) which is still used today for open air performances.

Holidays in Bulgaria are best on the move. Take a short car journey away from Plovdiv and you will find a number of monasteries, old ruins, churches and natural phenomena.

Assen´s Fortress can be reached by driving South into the Rhodope Mountains to the town of Assenovgrad. Visit Bachkovo monastery built in 1083. Enter the library and see the well preserved manuscripts, view the paintings in the churches. Tsar Ivan Alexander is still discernable on 11th and 14th century murals in the Refectory (1601) and in the Assumption of the Holy Virgin main church (1604).

Plovdiv – Old TownVisit the Araporo Monastery (1858) near the village of Zlatovruh or the biggest monastery of all, the Rila Monastery, built in the 10th century by Bulgarian Monk St Ivan Rilski.

If this is not your thing, try Snezhanka Cave (snow white) 5km Southwest of Peshlera. Open all year round, this cave boasts relics of real caveman’s fireplaces, several halls where hand made pottery has been found dating Plovdiv – Old Townback to the Thracians and covered with white Stalactites and Stalagmites.
